ithinkfi Overdraft Protection
Three overdraft options, one clear rule: link savings and most overdraft situations cost nothing. Here is how the math works.
How Credit Unions Work Today
- Linking savings covers overdrafts free of charge; the first transfer each month is free even with other options.
- Overdraft fees are $25 with a strict one-per-day cap, below the $34 bank average.
- Transactions under $5 never trigger a fee.
- Members who configured protection paid $9 in overdraft fees in 2024 on average, versus $68 without.
The three options
Members choose between a savings link, a $500 buffer line, or standard coverage with alerts.
| Option | Cost per event | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Savings link | $0 first transfer/mo, then $25 | Everyday protection |
| $500 buffer | Interest on amount used | Recurring shortfalls |
| Standard + alerts | $25, capped 1/day | Occasional gaps |
The savings link is the clear winner
The savings link covers shortages from your own savings at no fee for the first transfer each month.
For members with a funded savings account, this option makes most overdraft situations free. Subsequent transfers cost $25 each, still capped at one per day.
The catch is behavioral: repeated transfers silently drain savings, which is why we pair the link with balance alerts by default.
The $500 buffer
The buffer is a $500 line of credit attached to checking, priced at 15% APR only on the amount actually used.
A $200 shortfall repaid in 10 days costs about 82 cents. The buffer suits members with recurring timing gaps, like rent landing before payday.
This option does NOT apply to accounts opened under 90 days ago, which must wait for the buffer review.
Fee rules worth knowing
Three rules shrink overdraft costs: no fees under $5, one fee per day maximum, and no fee if the account is covered by end of day.
The end-of-day rule means a shortfall fixed the same day never costs a cent. We publish the rules because most members never read the fine print until a fee appears.
The data does not cover business accounts, which follow a different overdraft policy.
The cost of doing nothing
Unconfigured members paid $68 in overdraft fees on average in 2024; configured members paid $9.
The $59 gap is pure configuration, not luck or income. Setup takes two minutes in account settings.
Initially we assumed members avoided configuration because of complexity; surveys showed most simply never knew the options existed.
The savings link turned my monthly panic into a non-event. One setup and overdrafts stopped costing money.
The buffer caught a rent-and-payday mismatch for 82 cents. Banks charged me $34 for the same situation.
