ithinkfi Error Resolution

How ithinkfi investigates errors: your rights under Regulation E, the 10-business-day timeline, and the escalation path that gets answers.

How Credit Unions Work Today: Error Resolution

Your rights under Regulation E

Regulation E gives you 60 days from the statement date to report an electronic error and guarantees a written investigation result.

Reported errors receive a provisional credit within 10 business days while we investigate. If the error is confirmed, the credit becomes permanent; if not, we explain in writing and the credit reverses.

This right does NOT apply to business accounts, which follow different rules under the Uniform Commercial Code.

The investigation timeline

The typical ithinkfi error investigation runs 8 days, from report to final letter.

StepTimelineWhat happens
Report filedDay 0Case number issued, hold placed if needed
Provisional creditDay 3-5Funds restored while we investigate
Evidence reviewDay 5-8Merchant and network records pulled
Final letterDay 8-10Written result, credit made permanent or reversed

What counts as an error

Errors include unauthorized transfers, wrong amounts, duplicate postings, and missing deposits; dissatisfaction with a purchase does not count.

Merchant disputes over quality or delivery follow a different process, though the card networks handle chargebacks separately from Regulation E.

Initially we merged merchant disputes into the error pipeline but found claim times ballooned, so the two tracks split in 2022.

The escalation path

If the resolution letter does not satisfy you, escalate to the supervisory committee, then to the NCUA consumer hotline.

Escalated cases receive a second review by a different investigator, and members can request the file evidence used in the decision. The NCUA consumer assistance center is the external backstop for unresolved claims.

Where claims most often fail

Claims reported after the 60-day window or with shared login credentials are the two most common reasons an error claim is denied.

The 60-day clock starts on the statement date, not the transaction date. Shared credentials undercut the unauthorized-transfer requirement, which is why separate logins are a security and a claims issue.

The data does not cover claims older than 120 days, which are outside both our process and regulatory protection.

A double charge on rent money would have wrecked my month. The provisional credit landed in three days and the case closed in eight.

How long do I have to report a banking error?

You have 60 days from the statement date to report an electronic error under Regulation E.

When do I get a provisional credit?

Provisional credits land within 5 business days on average, and always within the 10-business-day regulatory window.

What happens if my claim is denied?

You receive a written explanation, and you can escalate to the supervisory committee and then the NCUA hotline.

Does Regulation E cover business accounts?

No, business accounts follow UCC rules instead, with different timelines.

Can I dispute a purchase I regret making?

No, buyer's remorse is not an error; error claims require an unauthorized, wrong, or missing transfer.

Resolution times by claim type

Non-fraud claims, like duplicate postings, resolve in 8 days on average. Fraud claims take 14 days because network evidence requests add a week.

Both land inside the regulatory window, but members should plan cash flow around the difference.

Report an error now

File through the secure portal or call; cases opened within 60 days receive full protection.
